Developer: in-house
Format: Wii (reviewed)
Genre: golf
The Wii scores a hole in one!
The Wii, with all its motion sensor magic, makes an ideal companion for any sports games that require a natural swinging motion. So step forward Mr Tiger Woods with his latest PGA 2007 incarnation to put Nintendo's latest platform through its paces.
But first let's examine the game a little. Course content doubles in this year's version of the world's best selling golf game with the addition of new PGA Tour licensed courses, including Firestone Country Club, Glen Abbey, Princeville, Spyglass Hill, St Andrews, and Bandon Dunes. There's also a wealth of established professionals to compete against including John Daly, Vijay Singh, Ian Poulter, Michael Campbell, and Annika Sorenstam, the most decorated golfer on the ladies PGA Tour. And of course, we can't forget Tiger Woods - who, thanks to universal facial capture (UCAP) technology, really does look just like his real life counterpart.
The atmosphere seems to have been cranked up a notch too. There's bigger galleries, mass crowd movement from hole to hole, rooting sections for and against you, and cheers from nearby greens to make you feel more part of the moment.
But what we really want to know about is the new control system and if it is more fulfilling than playing on an analogue pad. The answer is a resounding yes! The Wiimote is a perfect fit for a golf club and swinging the device feels as natural as shouting 'Four!' as the ball flies through the air. Whether you tilt the Wii-mote to hook and slice the ball or swing away for a long straight drive, the console's innovative game controller provides the most realistic golfing experience that we have ever had the pleasure of playing.
